Mary Hartmann, owner Girl in the Curl

Girl in the curl surf shop with its retro Hawaiian vibe and girlie girl merchandise mix, is a happening place for surfer girls to go hang out, talk story and shop.

Mary Hartmann shop proprietress and creator of girl in the curl grew up surfing the shores of California living the surf life style, past competitor turned surf instructor Mary decided to share her love of the ocean and surfing with others. She created her “swell time surf school” in 1987, and was the first to create a just for girls surf shop and surf school for girls in Orange County in 1997. Her store location in Dana Point, Calif. couldn’t be better, right on Pacific Coast Highway, near some of the best surf breaks in southern Calif.

Walking across the stores threshold is a venture into a small piece of surfing paradise. Girls can surf, this we know by now. But this shop in Dana Point proves they don’t have to mimic the boys to do it right. Packed with pastel, girlie, sparkly surfboards, wetsuits, colorful rash guards, and swim wear that don’t fall apart in a wave. Lots of hand carved jewelry and baubles made from sea shells, plucked from Tahiti, Tonga, and Fiji. A dazzling array of accessories for the body, beach and home with a girly, surfy, oceany, vibe. The result is an inviting ambiance that plays up the fact that today’s girl can, be both athletic and feminine. Mary felt the store should have a theme, when designing it she went with a feminine vintage surf look. She uses her Hawaiian and beach collectables as unique displays that enhance the stores surf girl image. A huge clam shell holds her pastel colored discs and scented, flower shaped surf wax, jewelry hangs from coral, art pottery from the 50’s, mermaid bowls and shell boxes are filled with bracelets, compact mirrors, lip gloss and hair ornaments from Hawaii.

At girl in the curl much of the experience is about discovery and surprise, down to the smallest detail sunglasses displayed on a bed of sea glass. But what people love most is the feeling they get when they walk away from girl in the curl, like catching the best wave of the day!!!!!! Come check it out.
