Mary Hartmann - Girl in the Curl owner & founder

Our Story.

Founder, Mary Hartmann caught her first wave at Doheny State Beach in 1970 and has been surfing there ever since. In an effort to share her love of the ocean and surfing, she started “Swell Time Surf School” in ‘87.

Girl in the Curl came to life in 1997 as the first surf shop and surf school in Orange County designed for girls. Her store location in Dana Point, Calif. couldn’t be better, right on Pacific Coast Highway, near some of the best surf breaks in Southern California.

Girl in the Curl is all about the experience – we want every customer to walk out feeling like they caught the best wave of the day!

Walking across the shop’s threshold is a venture into a small piece of surfing paradise. Every detail has been carefully designed & curated by Mary to deliver a vintage feminine oasis. Girl in the Curl is your one-stop shop for that girlie surfer vibe.

With its retro Hawaiian vibe and girlie-girl merchandise, Girl in the Curl is a happening place for surfer girls to hang out, talk, story, & shop!

Ocean awareness

We teach all participants about surf etiquette, the history of surfing, tides, and general ocean safety.

On top of that, we make it a priority to protect our fragile ocean and the animals that call it home. We provide education on sea life, host trash pickups, and strongly promote reduce, reuse, & recycle.
